Diesel Generator Introduction

Diesel generators are the most commonly used generators due to the diesel's unique trait – powerful, portable and highly dependable for a wide variety of uses. The typical type is water cooled and running at 1800 RPM. This makes the generators a great work horses as they are capable of operating for lengthier time compared to the gasoline generators. Besides, they also require minimal maintenance work and costs due to the absence of carburetors and spark plugs. They are also cheaper because of the low fuel costs in comparison to other fuels such as propane and gasoline.

Generators that run on diesel are similar to the diesel engines. There are two types of diesel generating set – the 4-stroke and 2-stroke operations. The 4-stoke operation uses four strokes and is the common operation used in most generators. The initial stroke is the power stroke. This is when a fine mist of diesel is scattered on the piston under a hot compressed air space. The pressure will cause the piston to move down and the movement will be converted to a rotary motion that drives the crankshaft. Next is the exhaust stroke that is instigated by the crankshaft turning momentum to move the piston up, followed by suction stroke and compression stroke. Despite being the cheaper generator among all, the High volt Generator sets could be way more expensive in terms of their setting up and this is often the deterrent factor for most users. They are also subjected to an extent of unclean burning compared to other fuel generators although it has been improved in the recent years. They may require a larger compartment for fuel but this is safer than storing gasoline. Another disadvantage is that they are much noisier than other fuel generators.

Many people somehow believe that the savings derived from the investment in generators that run on diesel are worth to outweigh the disadvantages. They are potentially more cost-effective in terms of the fuel and maintenance as well as saving the maintenance hassle. This is the main factor why the silent diesel generator set is the top rated choice among commercial users. Although they are usually produced in large units, they can also be found in smaller sizes.
